Several Major Real Estate Projects

Yawu Miller and Sandra Larson

In recent years, there has been considerable effort in Boston and other urban centers to stimulate entrepreneurship among blacks. Economic studies have indicated that insufficient involvement in business development has hindered the growth of black wealth. This chapter’s focus on four outstanding real estate projects highlights extraordinary achievements by black-led developers whose successes in Boston set an example that can help other community members see possibilities and reach for opportunities.

Crosstown Center was Boston’s first major black-led project, adding a Hampton Inn & Suites hotel, a large parking garage, an office building, and several retail and food establishments in Lower Roxbury. Harvard Commons created a high-quality residential neighborhood on the old State Hospital grounds at the Mattapan-Dorchester line. The One Lincoln/State Street Financial Center is one of Boston’s largest commercial buildings, while United Housing owns and manages a substantial inventory of affordable rental units.

A common characteristic of these projects is that they all are private enterprise endeavors. The developers generated profits and increased black wealth. In addition, all four are of sufficiently large scale to stand out as continuing symbols of achievement.
